Current Trends in Window Treatment Design - Interiors By Kelli

Main kelli October 13, 2014

Like fashion, styles in window treatments change over time. So what are today’s current windows wearing? For sure, we would describe them as simple, minimal with clean lines. Gone are the days of heavy, draped swags and jabots with heavy fringe and tassels. We are seeing a move toward pleated drapery panels with the emphasis on creative hardware and banding. Roman shades and woven wood shades are also popular. In combination with drapery panels we can accomplish a simple, finished product that will stand the test of time.

Combination Treatments

Layering pleated drapery panels over woven wood shades creates a casual, comfortable solution for this monochromatic family room.

Another monochromatic room, but this time more formal. The sheers diffuse the light while lowering the dark brown roman shades will provide privacy and protection from the sun. The ceiling is definitely the star of this room.

Trends in Pattern

Ikat remains a popular pattern choice. This simple roman shade packs a punch, especially by railroading the fabric to create the small valance.

We love this geometric print and the way it talks to the yellow grasscloth wallpaper on the ceiling.

We are starting to see a move back toward floral prints – but not your grandmother’s florals.   Think large scale and more modern.  This window treatment follows two trends – large scale floral and greek key trim, which seems to be everywhere – on drapery, furniture, tablecloths….oh my!

Banding

We love how banding adds beautiful detail and interest to even the simplest fabric – this blue banding makes a huge statement on these simple white drapery panels.  This banding coordinates with the pillow – and together they make an impact in this otherwise off-white palette.

Drapery Headings
Pleated drapery headings have come a long way over the years – no longer your mother’s boring pleats…..   Here are some examples of our favorites

How pretty is this trim – and we adore how it is inset and incorporated into the first goblet pleat on this silk drapery. Use goblet pleats for a formal look and be sure that they are made with enough fabric in the pleats for a luxurious look. The old standard is to stitch the pleats down 4” – but this pleat is probably 6” long – adding to the custom look.

The combination of color palette, casual linen and unfussy Euro pleats make this is a very quiet, restful room.

Use inverted pleated panels for a clean, modern and tailored look.  These have crystal nail head tacks for interest and are layered over embroidered sheers with a little bling.  Very pretty and very feminine.

We love how this drapery is pleated to pattern!  A custom detail you can’t get from ready-made drapery.

To sum up, window treatment styles are definitely more simple than we’ve seen in the past – but with custom detailing can still pack a punch. Give us a call – we’d love to talk about how we can help you dress your windows!
