Looking for an area rug for your interior design project? There are some do’s and don’ts to consider when selecting area rugs.
In the living room or family room, we like the furniture to sit entirely on the carpet, as shown below.
If this isn’t an option always make sure the rug is large enough that the front legs of all furniture are on the rug:
Redesigning the dining room? We always specify an area rug that is large enough to allow the chairs to be on the rug even when they are pushed back away from the table. There Is nothing more annoying than a teetering dining chair.
Is a bedroom retreat project in your future? We always like the area rug in our bedroom projects to be large enough that all the furniture fits with enough room to walk around the bed comfortably.
If you can’t find an area rug size that allows for everything to fit, choose a rug wide enough that you step on it when you get out of bed and long enough so that you can walk on it around the foot of the bed.
When in doubt, choose the larger size rug – our biggest don’t when it comes to rug sizing is DON’T SELECT A RUG THAT IS TOO SMALL FOR THE SPACE. Here are a couple of examples of rugs that are too small. These rugs are doing nothing for the functionality or aesthetics of the space
Now, look how beautiful this room is with a rug that is sized appropriately for the space and furnishings.

Great post! I have a question I hope you would answer… What is the best way to clean a wool area rug? I just bought this new rug for my living room but I think I already ruined it… This seems like something you know a lot about.
Luckily wool is easily cleaned. I recommend contacting a local professional carpet cleaner
